03.14.2013 Nurse Aide Career Training Close to Home

Genuine listening, caring and comforting can make a world of difference in the day and life of someone entrusted to the care of Harrison Senior Living staff and provides a sense of fulfillment that is a reward in itself.  A special place in the heart of a caregiver for senior citizens as well as the “soft skills” that the caregiver often brings to the role are enhanced through a professional training process.  Harrison House of Christiana, in conjunction with Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), will host the first in a series of nurse aide training classes in Christiana, Pennsylvania. This 120 hour course prepares the trainee to assist licensed staff to provide care for individuals who are hospitalized, receiving short term rehabilitation, or residing in skilled nursing facilities such as Harrison House of Christiana. A major focus of this training is to prepare the trainee to assist the resident to achieve and maintain the highest possible level of wellness, comfort and safety.  Trainees learn to incorporate infection control and safety awareness principles into care giving, as well as how to perform personal care duties including measuring and recording vital signs, bathing, dressing, toileting, assisting with meals, transporting, turning and positioning, and performing exercises. The first class will be held May 6 through June 22, 2013 and is designed for trainees who are already working during the day, with training during evening hours through the week, and day time hours for 3 Saturdays. The second class will be held June 24 through July 18, 2013. This is a day time class, primarily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with no classes on July 4th or 5th. Residents at all five Harrison Senior Living facilities will now benefit from better communication among the staff and improved safeguards on medical information with the implementation of EMR. Beginning January 1, 2013 Harrison House of Georgetown, Harrison House of Snow Hill, and Harrison House of Christiana began using the Point Click Care electronic medical records system. Harrison House of Coatesville and John B. Parsons in Salisbury, Maryland completed the company wide transition on February 1, 2013. US Senator Tom Carper of Delaware was in Georgetown, Delaware Friday, February 8th to congratulate Harrison House of Georgetown on their transition to electronic medical records. "Electronic medical records can help improve patient outcomes and lower health care costs, which is a win-win for both patients and providers," said U.S. Sen. Tom Carper. "As more organizations that take care of our aging population, like Harrison House of Georgetown, move to electronic medical records, the better coordinated care we can provide." The EMR program is a web-based program that allows access from any computer using an assigned login and password. This facilitates better communication. For example, when a Harrison Senior Living Director of Nursing is off duty and contacted by a staff member regarding a patient, The Director of Nursing can view the chart online and provide an informed decision on care. In addition a nurse can now open a resident’s chart from the medication cart while she is giving out medications to write a note about a significant finding. A shift-to-shift report is generated from the nursing notes allowing for follow up on any issues. The certified nursing assistants document all of their activities of daily living and the percentages of meals consumed on a wall computer or a kiosk. This can be monitored during the day if there has been a change in the resident’s status. Making the decision to go to an electronic medical record allows the staff of Harrison Senior Living to monitor the resident’s well-being with a thorough complete approach that is accessible by everyone. It allows all caregivers, both licensed and non-licensed, to be well informed and gives these caregivers the ability to access information wherever and whenever they need it. The investment to transition to EMR was approximately $100,000. Anticipated cost savings will come from not needing to purchase multiple paper forms (which will have a positive impact on the environment), decreasing the need for storing voluminous paper charts, decreasing the duplicative process of entering information more than once and saving labor costs of having to fax, mail and send out paper requested documentation.
