I want to thank all of you for the care and companionship you gave to my father during his time at Harrison Senior Living of Christiana. I appreciate that so many of you took the time to talk to him, listen to him and get to know him as a person. I will remember you fondly. — Kathy R., Christiana, PA

Genuine listening, caring and comforting can make a world of difference in the day and life of someone entrusted to the care of Harrison Senior Living staff and provides a sense of fulfillment that is a reward in itself. A special place in the heart of a caregiver for senior citizens as well as the “soft skills” that the caregiver often brings to the role are enhanced through a professional training process. Harrison House of Christiana, in conjunction with Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), will host the first in a series of nurse aide training classes in Christiana, Pennsylvania. This 120 hour course prepares the trainee to assist licensed staff to provide care for individuals who are hospitalized, receiving short term rehabilitation, or residing in skilled nursing facilities such as Harrison House of Christiana. A major focus of this training is to prepare the trainee to assist the resident to achieve and maintain the highest possible level of wellness, comfort and safety. Trainees learn to incorporate infection control and safety awareness principles into care giving, as well as how to perform personal care duties including measuring and recording vital signs, bathing, dressing, toileting, assisting with meals, transporting, turning and positioning, and performing exercises.
The first class will be held May 6 through June 22, 2013 and is designed for trainees who are already working during the day, with training during evening hours through the week, and day time hours for 3 Saturdays. The second class will be held June 24 through July 18, 2013. This is a day time class, primarily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with no classes on July 4th or 5th.

Harrison House of Christiana recognized over 50 employees during a special luncheon on January 30, 2013.  Recipients were honored for years of service, perfect attendance, employee of the month, and retirement.  Two employees received special recognition.  Nurse Phyllis Desalle received the Employee of the Year Award and the late Christian Strohmaier, maintenance employee, received the Lenna Adams Nellius Award for outstanding service to the residents and staff of Harrison House.  Mr. Strohmaier passed away in late December but numerous family members and neighbors attended the luncheon on his behalf and his son Chris accepted Mr. Strohmaier’s award. Here are the photos of the event or enjoy the slideshow of the event which was hosted by Administrator Brian Milley.
